Chairman of Fordham’s theology department marries another man — UPDATED

Somehow, I missed this little item in last Sunday’s New York Times. A reader sent it my way:
Patrick Anthony Bergquist and J. Patrick Hornbeck II were married Saturday in Manhattan. The Rev. Matthew J. Moretz performed the ceremony at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, where he is an associate rector.Mr. Bergquist, 35, is the director of children, youth and family ministries at St. Bartholomew’s. He graduated from Anderson University in Indiana and received a master’s degree in theology from Northern Seminary in Lombard, Ill……Dr. Hornbeck, 33, is the chairman of the theology department and an associate professor of medieval and reformation history at Fordham University in the Bronx. He graduated from Georgetown and received a doctoral degree in theology from Oxford University.

“While Catholic teachings do not support same-sex marriage, we wish Professor Hornbeck and his spouse a rich life filled with many blessings on the occasion of their wedding in the Episcopal Church,” said Bob Howe, Fordham’s senior director of communications. “Professor Hornbeck is a member of the Fordham community, and like all University employees, students and alumni, is entitled to human dignity without regard to race, creed, gender, and sexual orientation.”

-Is FU a Catholic institution or is it a secular university? Its logo seems to be Catholic.
-If it is a Catholic college who controls it? Does the bishop of that diocese have any control?

This is one reason I don't give to any "Catholic" institution unless I know for certain that it is an orthodox catholic institution. I don't want to waste my hard earned money. I donate to legal groups-Catholic and non catholic alike. They are fighting in the courts to uphold moral and ethical values in our culture. When the non catholic groups are fighting in the courts to preserve their religious freedom -they are fighting for Catholic religious freedom too.
If these institutions want to fool around with these sodomy shenanigans let them do it on their own dime and time.)
THE ANNUAL TRUTH TO FREEDOM AWARDS
In this post we are going to award our prestigious and highly coveted Truth To Freedom Award. We searched the public square for serious "points of truth" and selected two outstanding public citizens.(Drum roll).
The first winner is Dr.David Carlin.He is in the public square writing books,posting articles and comments on Facebook,speaking the truth and activating the truth. He has fearlessly and consistently spoken out against abortion, sodomy marriage,and other moral and ethical issues of our time.
The second winner is Joseph Fanning (Broad Street Joe).Broad Street Joe is the fearless truth warrior who has his display of large pictures of aborted baby human beings in front of the abortion killing clinic on Broad St. in Cranston near St.Pauls church. Professional football had its hero--"Broadway Joe" Namath (he wore panty hose when he played on those cold winter days).The pro life community in RI has a hero in Broad St. Joe. Many pro life people in RI demonstrate in front of the Broad St abortion killing clinic but not with the same tenacity and fortitude as Broad St. Joe. He is like the proverbial postman-"Neither snow ,sleet,or rain ..." deters him and his gruesome pictures from his appointed rounds. He is truly one of God's Grunts who do the dirty work for truth and get only bad press from the leftist/progressive/communist media.
Broad St. Joe should get the highest award of the the multi billion dollar advertising industry for their "Truth in Advertising" category. His large pictures of dead bodies of aborted baby human beings shows in graphic detail what is truly going on behind the brick walls of the Broad St. abortion killing clinic.
If Broad St. Joe had lived in the Nazi pagan period he would have been called Auschwitz Joe. He would have been on the side of those railroad tracks going into the Nazi death camps exposing and warning of what was going on behind those brick walls.
Although our Truth To Freedom award doesn't have any pecuniary benefits,they carry our heart felt and deep admiration,respect,and gratitude for your promotion of the truth,the whole truth,and nothing but the truth,in your particular sphere of influence.

Of course this is no surprise--the activist court has been developing a divine sense of itself to re-image creation and godly order for well over a hundred years.
The church has always stood apart from culture and state to speak truth to both . . . and we will continue to do so.
But will Christians be granted the protections to continue to speak and act according to their faith, or will Christian teaching become hate speech, Christian practice become discrimination? Will the cross become the next Confederate flag?
What sort of rule of government will we have? Charles Murray tells this story in “American Exceptionalism”: “As Benjamin Franklin left Independence Hall on the final day of the Constitutional Convention, a woman asked him, ‘Well, Doctor, what have we got? A republic or a monarchy?’ Franklin replied, ‘A republic, if we can keep it.”
The emotional terrorism of the left has already made our positions dangerous to even contemplate. FOX News was relieved to focus on Justice Roberts' conflicting judicial argument for Obamacare and against same-sex marriage, instead of talking about the implications of the ruling.
The risk to keeping the balance that makes America exceptional is high. Will we keep the balance that allows for religious freedom and freedom of speech . . . or will religious institutions face sanctions, denied the very rights and benefits same-sex couples have just won?

The Supreme Court has now ruled on gay marriage. They have proved zealous in their protection of a particular view of liberty. I can only pray that they will now prove equally zealous in protecting the religious liberty that will likely be severely endangered in consequence. As I looked for glimmers of hope in the majority opinion, this passage stood out to me:
"Finally, it must be emphasized that religions, and those who adhere to religious doctrines, may continue to advocate with utmost, sincere conviction that, by divine precepts, same-sex marriage should not be condoned. The First Amendment ensures that religious organizations and persons are given proper protection as they seek to teach the principles that are so fulfilling and so central to their lives and faiths, and to their own deep aspirations to continue the family structure they have long revered. The same is true of those who oppose same-sex marriage for other reasons."
I also take some solace in the fact that the opinion was 5-4 with the Chief Justice in dissent. He has been raked over the coals as some kind of fake conservative. Whatever one might say about him, he took his stand on maybe the biggest decision since Roe v. Wade. He flatly stated something that I think has needed to be heard by all during the last decade:
"And a State’s decision to maintain the meaning of marriage that has persisted in every culture throughout human history can hardly be called irrational."
The war over gay marriage appears to have been won. What remains is to see how far the consequences extend. I hope that Christian institutions will retain their convictions and that they will be permitted to continue to participate on an equal footing in American society. Liberal nostrums about the value of dissent are likely to be much tested in coming years.

Two points stand out in response to the SCOTUS ruling on same sex marriage. First, while this raises serious religious liberty concerns, we should see this as an opportunity for the gospel. Jesus is still risen. The world is not ending. God is still sovereign. We have an opportunity to respond with grace and truth to a culture increasingly confused about sexual issues. Second, we have the opportunity to show the world real love. As a church we must love each other, and our world, unlike ever before. Jesus said they will know us by our love. Whether by modeling marriage in our families, by how we love and incorporate singles into the church, or by how we love outsiders, we must show the world what true love looks like as a body of Christ. This may be easier said then done, but it must be our goal. If we do this, we have an opportunity for the gospel to shine.

Forty-two years after Roe v. Wade, the majority of the country opposes abortion -- the ultimate structural injustice to children. Future generations will come to their senses and realize the injustice that a genderless marriage institution inflicts on children. But when those people of the future overturn today’s ruling, not a single child born motherless or fatherless in a gender-neutral marriage will get his or her missing parent back. The structural injustice to children will be deep and permanent.
The thin disguise of “marriage equality” will not fool anyone. Nor will it atone for the wrong done this day.

The great challenge for leaders of the believing church is to recognize that the threat to our religious liberty is not something looming in a distant future -- it's now. Pastors need to assume a more prophetic stance, teaching their people that the truths of Scripture regarding human sexuality are not malleable and that neither the rulings of a court nor the pressure of secular culture should sway their allegiance to clear and authoritative biblical instruction on men, women, family, and marriage.
The most immediate political priority is defending the tax-exempt status of houses of worship and religious schools and colleges that will not accede to the legal implications of a finding that there is a constitutional "right" to same-sex unions. The loss of such status would cripple Christian ministries and schools across the country. Congress needs to pass the First Amendment Defense Act, which would protect "those individuals and institutions who promote traditional marriage from government retaliation."

Central Connecticut State University The SCOTUS decision doesn't so much redefine marriage as abolish it. In every culture throughout history, the single unifying characteristic of marriage has been that it is ultimately about connecting fathers and mothers to each other and to their children, so that children can be brought into the world and raised in a stable environment. Because it performs such an essential role for the survival of society, marriage has always been given a privileged position. It is not just about the couple, or the government would have no role in regulating what would amount to be a private relationship between two people. In effect, SCOTUS has preserved the name of marriage but has abolished the institution with this decision. We are now in uncharted waters, and the decision will have both foreseen consequences for religious liberty, and a host of unforeseen and unforeseeable consequences for society as a whole.

Exactly two years to the day after ruling against the federal Defense of Marriage Act, the Supreme Court has ruled that the constitution requires every state to license same-sex marriage. It is the wrong decision: an act of judicial activism that curtails the legitimate democratic process with no basis in the Constitution. Chief Justice Roberts succinctly offered the most appropriate response to the ruling in his dissent, asking of those who would toss out an understanding of marriage that has existed in every society throughout human history, "Just who do we think we are?"
How should Christians respond? Though we must not mitigate the consequences of this decision, ours is a long-term view. The church has persisted through unjust kings and courts before, and will until Christ returns once and for all. In the meantime, we have a job to do. The Manhattan Declaration describes it well:
"To strengthen families, we must stop glamorizing promiscuity and infidelity and restore among our people a sense of the profound beauty, mystery, and holiness of faithful marital love. We must reform ill-advised policies that contribute to the weakening of the institution of marriage, including the discredited idea of unilateral divorce. We must work in the legal, cultural, and religious domains to instill in young people a sound understanding of what marriage is, what it requires, and why it is worth the commitment and sacrifices that faithful spouses make."

am disappointed to come across the quote from Rob Scwarzwalder, stating
that defending the tax-exempt status of houses of worship, etc., needs

No sir! Taxes are everyone's responsibility, especially followers of Christ, who commanded the People of His day to, "Give to Caesar that which belongs to Caesar."
The primary political priority now must be to elect and appoint persons who believe that the Constitution is the rulebook, not merely a jumping off point for legislative, executive, or judicial improvisation.

The Elephant in the Vestibule
.Are we, the church, learning anything from the tsunami of lawlessness
and depravity that's sweeping our nation? I don't mean, are we devising
go-forward strategies to mitigate the effects. Such strategizing is all
well and good. What I mean is, have we figured out yet WHY God is
judging us?
To hear most of my evangelical friends talk and blog, the answer is no. There's now plenty of open acknowledgement of the culture's accelerating downward slide. But precious little confession of “nos culpae” (our fault) from the church.
Yet the fact is, our own sins are legion and high in the catalog of things most offensive to God. Forgetting that to whom much is given much is required, we've let ourselves be characterized by everything from prayerlessness, to epidemic unconfessed involvement in pornography, to being ashamed of unpopular parts of the Scriptures.
But these sins, and many more, pale in comparison to the signature sin of our generation, the “elephant in the vestibule”, as some call it: namely, 42 years of unutterably abominable persistence in deliberately passing by, apathetically and Pharisee-like, the 58 million children aborted on our watch. We have taken leave of both our senses and our Bibles if we imagine for a moment that this is not, in large measure, what has precipitated God's righteous judgment on us this day.
If we don't learn our lesson and beat a hasty about-face, millions more will suffer unimaginably, for there will be no reason for God's judgment to lift. The about-face must begin with mourning and lamentation for decades of lukewarm Christianity. Then fruits need to be faithfully brought forth in keeping with our newfound repentance.
What Christ said of His own in the 1st Century is eminently applicable today:
“I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.” (Rev 3:15-19)
I'm still waiting for that repentance to happen. But as Neil Young sang, “I'm growing old.”
To hear most of my evangelical friends talk and blog, the answer is no. There's now plenty of open acknowledgement of the culture's accelerating downward slide. But precious little confession of “nos culpae” (our fault) from the church.
Yet the fact is, our own sins are legion and high in the catalog of things most offensive to God. Forgetting that to whom much is given much is required, we've let ourselves be characterized by everything from prayerlessness, to epidemic unconfessed involvement in pornography, to being ashamed of unpopular parts of the Scriptures.
But these sins, and many more, pale in comparison to the signature sin of our generation, the “elephant in the vestibule”, as some call it: namely, 42 years of unutterably abominable persistence in deliberately passing by, apathetically and Pharisee-like, the 58 million children aborted on our watch. We have taken leave of both our senses and our Bibles if we imagine for a moment that this is not, in large measure, what has precipitated God's righteous judgment on us this day.
If we don't learn our lesson and beat a hasty about-face, millions more will suffer unimaginably, for there will be no reason for God's judgment to lift. The about-face must begin with mourning and lamentation for decades of lukewarm Christianity. Then fruits need to be faithfully brought forth in keeping with our newfound repentance.
What Christ said of His own in the 1st Century is eminently applicable today:
“I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.” (Rev 3:15-19)

C) A CALL FOR CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE
This post today is a call for CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE in defense of the truth,the US Constitution,and the future of our beloved country. We must proclaim the truth and then put it into action.This must be done by our words and our actions. If by doing so, we transgress the law (state or federal), then so be it. We must be willing to be arrested and incarcerated. Yes,this is a drastic action,but we have no choice. The political parties are moribund. The Democratic party is the corrupt party and the Republican party is the dumb,dumb,dumb party.
Each of us,individually,must be brave,and proclaim,as sovereign citizens of our Constitutional Republic,the truth,the whole truth,and nothing but the truth-so help us God.
If we are affective,then we can expect to be excoriated and vilified by the national leftist/progressive,communist media. We should wear this vituperation and vitriolic response as a badge of honor.
All of us,bloggers and non-bloggers,are "points of truth." The millions of us must speak up and act up for the truth and the US Constitution whatever the consequences. even if we have to go to jail. The present POTUS has worked to "transform" our Constitutional Republic to a Socialist Republic(ala.
Eastern Europe ,Cuba,South Vietnam,etc.)
The present POTUS has socialized the free market health system in the US
The Federal Judiciary has imposed their personal opinions as Constitutional law.
The Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court "Razzle Dazzle Roberts" has unconstitutionally
legislated from the bench and then proclaimed his legislation constitutional. He did this twice on
different cases concerning Obamacare. He seems oblivious to the constitutional principle of separation
of powers.
Supreme Court Justices have imposed their personal opinions as constitutional law in the sodomy
marriage case.
The federal government has encouraged , promoted,and financed abortion and sodomy marriage
around the world.

A ) AMERICAN REVOLUTION 2--JULY 4 2015

Give Me Liberty Or Give Me JAIL
No man thinks more highly than I do of the patriotism, as well as
abilities, of the very worthy gentlemen who are in the US House and Senate. But different men often see the same subject in different lights;
and, therefore, I hope it will not be thought disrespectful to those
gentlemen if, entertaining as I do opinions of a character very opposite
to theirs, I shall speak forth my sentiments freely and without
reserve. This is no time for ceremony. The question before the country is
one of awful moment to this country. For my own part, I consider it as
nothing less than a question of freedom or liberty; and in proportion to
the magnitude of the subject ought to be the freedom of the debate. It
is only in this way that we can hope to arrive at truth, and fulfill the
great responsibility which we hold to God and our country. Should I
keep back my opinions at such a time, through fear of giving offense, I
should consider myself as guilty of treason towards my country, and of
an act of disloyalty toward the Majesty of Heaven, which I revere above
all earthly kings. Mr. President, it is natural to man to indulge in the illusions of hope. We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth, and listen to the song of that siren till she transforms us into beasts. Is this the part of wise men, engaged in a great and arduous struggle for liberty? Are we disposed to be of the number of those who, having eyes, see not, and, having ears, hear not, the things which so nearly concern their temporal salvation? For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it may cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the worst, and to provide for it.
I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided, and that is the lamp of experience. I know of no way of judging of the future but by the past. And judging by the past, I wish to know what there has been in the conduct of the Federal Govt. for the last fifty years to justify those hopes with which gentlemen have been pleased to solace themselves and the country. Is it that insidious smile with which our petition has been lately received? Trust it not, sir; it will prove a snare to your feet. Suffer not yourselves to be betrayed with a kiss. Ask yourselves how this gracious reception of our petition comports with those despotic preparations which cover our waters and darken our land. Are IRS Agents necessary to a work of love and reconciliation? Have we shown ourselves so unwilling to be reconciled that force must be called in to win back our love? Let us not deceive ourselves, sir. These are the implements of tyranny and subjugation; the last arguments to which despots resort. I ask gentlemen, sir, what means this legal array, if its purpose be not to force us to submission? Can gentlemen assign any other possible motive for it? Has America any enemy, in this quarter of the world, to call for all this accumulation of tyrannical laws? No, sir, she has none. They are meant for us: they can be meant for no other. They are passed to bind and rivet upon us those chains which the Federal ministry have been so long forging. And what have we to oppose to them? Shall we try argument? Sir, we have been trying that for the last ten years. Have we anything new to offer upon the subject? Nothing. We have held the subject up in every light of which it is capable; but it has been all in vain. Shall we resort to entreaty and humble supplication? What terms shall we find which have not been already exhausted? Let us not, I beseech you, sir, deceive ourselves. Sir, we have done everything that could be done to avert the storm which is now coming on. We have petitioned; we have remonstrated; we have supplicated; we have prostrated ourselves before the Congress, and have implored its interposition to arrest the tyrannical hands of thePotus and White House Our petitions have been slighted; our remonstrances have produced additional violence and insult; our supplications have been disregarded; and we have been spurned, with contempt, from the foot of the White House! In vain, after these things, may we indulge the fond hope of peace and reconciliation. There is no longer any room for hope. If we wish to be free-- if we mean to preserve inviolate those inestimable privileges for which we have been so long contending--if we mean not basely to abandon the noble struggle in which we have been so long engaged, and which we have pledged ourselves never to abandon until the glorious object of our contest shall be obtained--we must fight back! I repeat it, sir, we must fight back An appeal to civil disobedience and to the God of hosts is all that is left us!
They tell us, sir, that we are weak; unable to cope with so formidable an adversary. But when shall we be stronger? Will it be the next week, or the next year? Will it be when we are totally disarmed, and when a IRS Agent shall be stationed in every house? Shall we gather strength by irresolution and inaction? Shall we acquire the means of effectual resistance by lying supinely on our backs and hugging the delusive phantom of hope, until our enemies shall have bound us hand and foot? Sir, we are not weak if we make a proper use of those means which the God of nature hath placed in our power. The millions of people, armed in the holy cause of liberty, and in such a country as that which we possess, are invincible by any force which our enemy can send against us. Besides, sir, we shall not fight our battles alone. There is a just God who presides over the destinies of nations, and who will raise up friends to fight our battles for us. The battle, sir, is not to the strong alone; it is to the vigilant, the active, the brave. Besides, sir, we have no election. If we were base enough to desire it, it is now too late to retire from the contest. There is no retreat but in submission and slavery! Our chains are forged! Their clanking may be heard on the plains of America! The struggle is inevitable--and let it come! I repeat it, sir, let it come.
It is in vain, sir, to extenuate the matter. Gentlemen may cry, Peace, Peace-- but there is no peace. The war is actually begun! The next gale that sweeps from the north will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms! Our brethren are already in the field! Why stand we here idle? What is it that gentlemen wish? What would they have? Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me JAIL

But our sanguinity (joy/optimism) must never be a papering over of our own unfaithfulness. It is irresponsible to put on a happy face when we ourselves are in large measure responsible for letting evil triumph. The proper response is lamentation, mourning the sins of ours which brought on the righteous judgment of God. Proverbs 29:2 is instructive: “When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, But when a wicked man rules, people groan.” We should be following Jeremiah's lead and be lamenting (recall he wrote called Lamentations) our decades of sinful compromise with the world rather than simply and solely rejoicing that God, in His covenant faithfulness, will, despite our sinful irresponsibility and the ensuing evil it will bring, use this to purify His church and ultimately turn the tables on the devil.
God is ultimately in control, no question about it. But that does not mean that everything that happens is His will. If, for example, an intruder comes into my house and rapes my wife and kills my children, that may indeed be the will of God, a la Job 1-2.
However, if the intruder was effectively invited into my house as a result of my gross irresponsibility (e.g., my knowing he was in the neighborhood intent upon doing evil, and I not only left the door open, but advertised the fact that we were defenseless), then no, it was not the will of God for the evil to happen. It was my blatantly going against His will and giving a foothold to the Devil for him (the Devil) to work HIS will (cf. Eph 4:27).
Does that mean God is not in control? Of course not. But it means instead of working good BY me He has to work good IN SPITE OF me. He is always able to bring good out of evil. But His control is despite my egregiously sinful irresponsibility, not because of it. He never wills our irresponsibility.
It is useful to recall that the only thing worse than an an infidel is one who irresponsibly refuses to care for his own (1 Tim 6:8). That--our sinful irresponsibility--is, I submit, in great measure why we are now dealing with this SCOTUS ruling. It was not the will of God to bring this judgment upon us. But because we, His people, did not repent (see my earlier comment below), He essentially had no choice but to bring it. After all, the Judge of all the earth will do right (Gen 18:25).
You say we must not “lose our saltiness”. We already have. In great measure we already have. Those who fail to see what is happening is a manifestation of God's righteous judgment upon us, His people, would do well to reacquaint themselves with Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Amos, etc.
God ultimately wins, no question about that. The question is, are we on the Lord's side? That remains to be seen. It is precisely what the days immediately ahead will determine. We have decidedly NOT been on His side these past several decades as we ought to have been.
The apostle Paul exhorts us to “run so as to win”. God will win. Will we? Will He find, when He returns, faith(fulness) on the earth? We decide that.
